Zombies at College

Zombies. Vampires. Werewolves. There is a worldwide fascination with beings that have somehow managed to escape the usual path of living and then dying that the rest of us are stuck with. The interest is so strong that there is now a college course at the University of Baltimore that is "dedicated to the study of zombies in popular culture." The instructor of the class, Arnold Blumberg, notes that zombies "have always been a reflection of where we are as a country. What we're fearing, what we're hoping for, and by taking a look at that, you can learn a lot about who we are as a people." Really? I guess I missed the results of the polls that ask the American public their views on zombies in the media as a means of understanding the nation's current psyche.

However, Blumberg does have a point. While a class on zombies may seem superfluous, it is evident that people everywhere have always been concerned with matters of life and death. There seems to be an obsession with things that we just can't know for absolutely sure, things that are intangible, invisible. As a Christian, while I might consider it a waste of time and money to take a class on the undead (besides being really gross), it is always worthwhile to learn about the unseen.

  1. I think that class would be SO cool! I don't really know how I would be able to apply it to anything other than my video game skills, but still I think I would love take that class!

  2. Not only that, but when you really study people and you really search deep within to find the human desire there is more to it. People desire to live a life of freedom of immortality. People desire to possess great strengths and be in control over various situations. People also possess the desire to be able to move through life without having to worry, and I think that is what the fictional world offers. It offers a way of escape for those that are fed up with life and want something different from what they have. But people need to learn how to be content, and pursue a life that pleases the Lord, and then everything else will fall into place. Seek the Kingdom of God first, and all His righteousness, and THEN all the other things will be added to the individual's life.
