I was reading at the New York Time website an article that stated that having sisters can make you feel better or happier. According to the article, a recent study on adolescents proved that people who maintain a good relationship with their female siblings are more unlikely to report feelings such as depression or unhappiness.
The article also states the fact that women initiate conversations more often than men, therefore, boys and girls who happen to have female siblings talk more frequently. The fact that influences happiness in this case, then, is not gender. It’s just talking!
As the student from class 507 have learned (hopefully), talking is also connecting. And relationships are all about communication. If we communicate well, we might find that relationships are not as hard as they look. And it’s actually fun getting to know someone, or just sharing what is on your mind with someone you love and trust.
Dr. Larry Crabb, in his book Connecting, talks about how powerful relationships can be in the healing process, and the power of connecting with people. Through talking comes true connection and through connection comes the restoring of souls.
Maybe that’s what we need. Leave home for a moment, stop the facebook chatting, maybe even take a break from work and school papers and actually talk! Connect to people. The worst thing that could happen is…happiness.
I have never thought about how a female sibling communicates more in which reduces feelings of depression but that is so true. Just thinking of my own family, it is just me and my older brother and we do have a lot of good conversations that I initiate. It is a way for us to connect and is quite refreshing. I believe he feels the same way. I am glad us females can be of some kind of help to these guys :)
ReplyDeleteI can honestly attest to this in an odd way. Growing up with my sister did allow our relationship to develop into something beautiful. Although we had our rough patch we are now at an age where we can learn to appreciate each other and learn from each other as well. As for my other sister whom I did not really grow up with, our relationship is distant and somewhat forced, it seems robotized and I find it difficult to communicate with her. SO on one hand I would say the article is on to something on the other hand I would say I am not so sure about that.
