Cure or Care

I am a science guy. I love everything about science and I and enjoy reading articles about it. I was on the worldmag website when I found this article about cure or care. The article talks about how why the government and the new healthcare plan is not putting more effort to funding more programs to find cures for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. We live in a world where there is constant drag for power and who possess the best technology, but when it comes to funding more programs for diseases that have plagued us for a long time, we are satisfied with just caring for the afflicted. I do not agree with this. A lot of resources are being wasted. I do not like the way healthcare is being treated not only in this country, but around the world. People are dying from the most common and basic diseases. I can only hope and pray that we as a society will step up and start setting our priorities straight.

  1. Kay, I liked this article. Its very interesting that we spend so much time treating diseases rather than trying to cure them. A long time ago, I remember someone posing the question, "If someone found a cure for cancer, do you think anyone would admit it?" I was appalled at such a thought, especially because I am such an idealist and hope that those in powerful positions have more integrity than that. I guess in the same way tobacco companies aren't shut down, there are some fears that any real cure for cancer would be shot down-- too much money and jobs tied into it. At the same time, finding a cure would probably be a huge money saver for America because of all the government funded money going into paying for people's bills.

  2. Thanks for the comment Tracy! It is an appalling thought. The sad thing is, it could probably happen. This is one of the reasons I want to go into the science field. I do not know why progress is not being made with a lot of diseases. Caring and treating is not just going to cut it. We need to start focusing on cures now.
