Becoming a Visionary

I was reflecting on my life journey the other day and considering the people who have been most influential in my life. As I thought about it, I realized that those people in my life, of whom I hold great respect, are those who have expressed a vision for me. These are people who have been my biggest cheerleaders whin I was doing what I ought and have also been able to bring me up short when I'm wrong. They are individuals who have seen something in me that is good, are burdened for that to be revealed, and encourage me to press on. They are my visionaries.

Dr. Crabb's book, Connecting, speaks of the importances of having such visionaries present in one's life. He discusses the value of developing a vision for others. I have thought about this concept often but not with such terminology. I believe it to be vital to the counseling session. It is hope that the client seeks. Although solutions are needed as well as trust and a a listening ear, it is hope that the client longs for. As Christian counselors, it is of utmost importance to prayerfully (not flippantly) be visionaries for the client and provide them with the hope of who they can become.

  1. I think the power of someone believing in you is one of the most powerful forces on this earth. I think that counselors should always belive in their clients becaues if they do not why are they wasting their time talking with someone if they do not think they will actually change? Clients will not have the confidence to change what has happened over the span of a lifetime unless they know we belive in thier ability to do so.

  2. Vision is a goal that God gave us. The vision is a string that connects us with God and is a motivation that keeps us from believing on him. A person need motivation, it is a must for a change to occur. Without motivation a person cannot change or move on from where the person is standing. Just like Jesus had purpose when he came down to earth, God has given each one of us a purpose to live on this world.

  3. This is a good post, but in reading the comment by Jun, I disagree.

I wouldn't say that vision is the goal that God gave us. Given from God, yes. Is it a goal? I don't know about that. It seems a bit shortsighted (pun intended). A vision is helpful in reaching a goal, but is not the goal in and of itself.
